Satya Shorts and Schooner Tee Complete a Capsule
This year I spent A LOT of time combing the web for a short pattern that I could utilize in the capsule wardrobe I was planning for my girls. I wanted a go-to short pattern that was more practical than the Papillon Shorties that I often rave about. I needed something that was a quick sew and wouldn’t need pleats ironed before each wear. **Affiliate links are used in this post. If you decide to purchase a pattern from a link on this page, this means you will be helping to support my fabric hoarding tendencies at no extra cost to yourself.
When I was scoping for patterns I had a particular look I was going for, but fit was something I looked at as the most important criteria. I can’t stand the poochey crotches and saggy bums that we often see in many PDF short patterns. I’m serious when I say it took me weeks to settle on the patterns I went with. I read a lot of reviews, looked at all the suggestions people made, and ended up trying two new to me patterns. The first was the Satya Shorts from Jennuine Design.
The Satya Pattern includes pants and shorts. It features fun front pockets and has back pockets too. I was too lazy with this project to add the back pockets. Sorry. This also includes a loose fit and a slim fit option and multiple waistbands. Basically, you’ve got a lot to work from with this pattern. For all my versions I used the slim fit shorts with the single piece waistband.
The first pair I sewed up was this navy polka dot pair. I used a woven polyester that was in my stash because I was trying to be frugal, and I had chosen navy as one of my base neutrals for my capsule. I loved these shorts right off the machine, and even more once they were on a body and I saw the fit was exactly what I was going for. I liked how they turned out so much, I decided to use the pattern for my Upcycle Challenge Entry.
For this pair, I used less of the hem allowance to add some length so the hem wouldn’t interfere with the pocket I was utilizing from the shirt I upcycled. I liked how the little change in the length gives them a bit of a different look. I absolutely hate wearing yellow around my face, but I love yellow as an accessory. I thought it would be fun to use yellow as a neutral in my capsule. I think it worked well as there was only one shirt I created in my capsule that I wouldn’t pair with these yellow shorts. It was a yellow floral.
I stitched up two more pairs of Satya shorts to round out my capsule. I made a pair from a two-toned linen cotton blend and then a dark blue chambray. Both of these fabrics were from my stash. I’m pretty sure they were rejects from my Project Run and Play fabric shopping. I’m glad they are getting used now and love how they went with the tops I had for my capsule. For reference, I hemmed these two pairs with a 3/4″ hem. This was between the hems of the blue polka dots and the yellow shorts. I thought this would be a good length for taking them into school.
To round off my capsule I put together 3 Schooner Tees (also from Jennuine Designs) that would pair with all of these shorts. After I got these all sewn up, I thought I would do a little photo shoot and have one of my 5 year olds model every combination that was possible. Bahaha.
She let me know that these were keepers for sure. Needless to say we weren’t able to get all of our combinations in. I hope she never runs for president because these photos could get some attention if they were dug up down the road. Hehe. I’m not sure what’s going on with the “wink-eye” but it’s a standard photo pose these days.
In all seriousness though, I hope you scope out the combinations of shorts and tops. Even though they aren’t ALL modeled here, I hope you can see how these outfits look different just by swapping around the top and shirt combo. (And maybe a hair bow color too.)
With these four shorts and three tops, that is 12 combinations from just the Schooner Tee and the Satya Shorts for my capsule. I’ll be doing a full capsule round up soon, but here’s a quick look at the 12 combos from Jennuine Designs Patterns. (Disclaimer… Flat Lays are not my forte.)
To round out the capsule I have a handful of other tops that I’ve stitched up to go with these same shorts, plus a few other bottoms. All in all, I’ve come closer than ever before to having stitched up a summer wardrobe. These two patterns alone could get me through the summer if I needed them too.
What are your thoughts so far! Would you use yellow as a neutral? Is there too much blue here? I’d love to know what you are thinking.
