Several years ago Katy at Wild + Wonderful started hosting an annual Sew Americana Tour.  I participated the first year and absolutely loved my creation.  I share it often when the day calls for a little patriotic nod.  You can find that post here.  Last

A Garden for a Queen

Project Run and Play Season 15 is officially live! I’m so excited to see everyone’s creations.  I’ve loved connecting with the designers so far this season.  Many of them are people that I’ve been connected with in the blogging world for a while.  I hope you will check out all of their creations! Please, don’t forget to vote for your favorite look here.  Public voting is one third of the scoring this season, so don’t miss out on supporting your favorite look. (Which I’m secretly hoping is the one your are looking at right now.) Be sure to look for the flat lay image below if you want to vote for this look.

If you have somehow missed the details for Week 1, the theme was to create a design based on one of the Wonders of the World.  This could be an Ancient Wonder or a Modern Wonder.  For my inspired look, I chose the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. It turns out that between the designers, only three Wonders were actually selected.  How crazy is that? The Hanging Gardens have several different theories around its creation. There isn’t actually solid proof that the gardens ever existed, however many believe that they would have been located in what is now present day southern Iraq.  Most accounts describe the Gardens being built by Nebuchadrezzar II for his wife that was homesick for her mountainous and green homeland.  Our look incorporates inspiration based upon these notions.  First, the garden was built for a queen.  I wanted to create something elegant to honor that by using satin and chiffon.  Silk would have been nice right? But this is a children’s garment and I was already pushing the limits on practical.  The gold lace flowers across the bodice are a nod to the garden life itself, while the gold represents the wealth of the kingdom.  The green color of the dress is to represent the greenery of the garden.  The garden is believed to have multiple tiers or layers in its design, so I included a layered skirt to nod to this feature.

To kick of my design I used the Lil Luxe Collection Luxe Dress as my design “block” so to speak.  You won’t see too much of the dress in my design, but I want to give proper credit where it is due.  This design features a cross over front bodice.  The base is a matte satin white with a chiffon overlay.  This was my first attempt at hand draping.  I’m gonna be honest, I spent a LOT of time with my newly adopted mannequin girl.  We bonded quite a bit over the last week and a half while tackling this project.  If you follow my Instagram stories, I shared that I think I’m going to have to give her a name.  I’m not sure what it will be yet.  I’m so glad I attempted the draping.  I have so much to learn, but I really enjoyed the journey so far.

My favorite part to this entire design is the lace flowers that trail down the bodice and onto the skirt.  I made all of the free standing lace flowers and leaf pieces on my Brother PE 770.  It was my hope that the flowers would add an additional dimension the the dress.  There are several sizes of flowers and designs within the lace that work together to create the look.  If you haven’t ever made Free Standing Lace and have an embroidery machine, you should definitely try it.  I already have plans in my head for more designs I want to whip up.  I may even get a free standing lace tutorial up on the blog.

For the back bodice a created a blocked look to feature both the satin and the chiffon fabrics.  I think it was a solid combination to bring all the pieces together.  I went with an invisible zipper for the back.  I don’t really think any other closure would have been appropriate with these fabrics.  I say that like I do invisible zippers all the time.  This was actually my second one…ever.  My first one turned out beautifully on a dress that never got finished.  Bless that dresses heart… It died a horrible death in the scrap bin.

Once the the bodice was completed I tackled the skirt.  This dress features a double circle skirt in satin with a chiffon overlay to create the tiered look inspired by the gardens.  I contemplated a full length skirt, but the practical side of me won the battle.  However, I absolutely love this length of dress.  It hangs slightly above the knee, but is still a modest length. I think it is a trending length in today’s fashion.  I love how the fabric hangs and think it was a perfect match to complete this design.  I adore circle skirts and there is noting as twirly as a double circle!

As for our photo location, we found a little side street in a historic part of our area.  The sidewalk featured this beautiful stone wall which I thought went great with our theme.  It obviously isn’t from 600 BC, but I still think it was appropriate.  The shade was great and the weather was freezing.  You may notice a little red nose in some of these shots.  It actually snowed several inches a few hours after we shot these photos. I’ll leave you with a few more images of our creation.  Don’t forget to head over to Project Run and Play and make your vote.  Thanks so much for stopping by.  I’d love to know what you think of this design.  Let me know in the comments! If I make it into Week 2, I hope you’ll come back to see more.

Project Run and Play Week 2: Spring Greenery

Project Run and Play Week 2: Spring Greenery

IMG_8093

We are back for Week 2 of Project Run and Play  (click link to go vote) with a theme of Greenery.  Greenery happens to be Pantone’s color of the year. Green is my favorite color so I was completely happy with this theme.  For my looks I carried the green vibe into both of my outfits while bringing in pops of pink and florals that remind me of the fresh beginning and bright colors to come with the entry of spring.  If you know me, you know floral prints are my homeboys.  If it’s a floral, I probably need it.

IMG_8037.jpg

To be honest my makes this week took on several forms before they landed at the endpoint.  It was a journey of reworking, redesigning, and a failed attempt at photos.  In the end, I’m very please with the creations.  I have to give my mom a big shout out this week because my husband has been down and out and she came down was super helpful.  She even made me some fresh strawberry jelly!

Bless her heart, can you tell she is cold?

The striped and floral dress took on the most forms throughout the week.  I’m so glad with the changes and love the striped bodice more than I would have imagined.  I don’t do a ton of mixing of prints, but I found this stripe buried in my scrap box and there was just enough to create this bodice.

IMG_7986

My focus for these creations was quality and nice finishes.  This bodice from Lil Luxe Collection features under-stitching along the neckline and the lined cap sleeve.  The skirt seam features an enclosed seam that I hand-stitched for a smooth finish at the waist.

IMG_8158

I designed the hi-lo gathered skirt for this dress and it is a great match for the curved front of the bodice.  The tulle falls just an inch and a half below the hemline of the floral.  The tulle length is enough for a peek of color without looking bulky or sloppy.  I hemmed the over skirt with a green bias facing.   This hides raw edges, makes for a smooth finish, and adds another pop of color.  I love to hem circle skirts this way and the curved nature of the hi-lo skirt is another great use for this method.

IMG_7999

The bodice closure on the dress has hidden buttons inside, but I wanted to spice this up and added some fun over-sized buttons I found in my jar. I love the texture of these.  I was super nervous about tackling stripe matching for a contest, but I think they were a success.  Do you ever put off stripes for the same reason?

IMG_8079.jpg

Don’t you just love that dress from the back?  It’s so dreamy!  I love that she loves it too.

IMG_8090

For my second look I started with a green floral print.  In fact, these floral prints are the same, just in different color ways.  Have you noticed?  As a random fact, I must really like this print because it turns out I bought it last year in a third colorway and made a dress from it. Ha! I didn’t even notice until I started sewing these up.  The skirt was the first make of this look.  I started with the Willow Skirt pattern from Violette Fields Threads, but wanted a fitted skirt rather than an elastic waistband.  I removed the elastic waistband created my own based on model measurements.  I added a button placket in the back with two decorative buttons, another fun find from the huge button wall at one of my local shops.  I was sure to keep the insides all nice and pretty by enclosing the seam at the waistband.

IMG_8205

For the apron I used my own design based on model measurements.   It features four pockets along with some decorative stitching and some ruffle trim.  I loved using some of my fancy stitches on my new machine! It’s the little things that can really add to a piece.

Next for this outfit is the pink top made from a bamboo knit.  This is my first time using bamboo and I have to say… is so soft.  Another find in town.  It started from the Isla dress from Simple Life Pattern Company.  I lengthened the dress bodice to a shirt length and scooped out the back slightly to mirror the back of the first dress.  This little model doesn’t like too much breeze in the back, so I went very conservative on the scoop.  I then hacked the front bodice by adding the ruched center panel.  I’m thinking I may need to do a tutorial on this.  Isla is a great pattern to use for this because it is lined, so none of the ruching or gathering is actually touching the wearer.  Isn’t that nice?  Total mom win here in the comfort category.

IMG_8115.jpg

I finished of this outfit with a few accessories.  The bow-tie necklace and the headband.  I started with a bow-tie pattern from 421 Myers Designs.  I left of the neckband and added some hardware.  Seriously, I’m going to have to get some tools of my own for these kinds of things.  I had to sneak some tools from the garage for this necklace.  The headband is my own design.  It has a small elastic center in the back for getting a nice snug fit without being too tight or rigid. It pairs well with my model’s short hair.

IMG_8086.jpg

Well, I think that’s a wrap on my Spring Greenery creations. Thanks so much for stopping in! I do hope you made it to the finish!  I’m sending you off with a final photo.  The girls warming up at the end of the shoot with my mom.  She really was a life saver with all her help.  Now, don’t forget to return to Project Run and Play to vote for your favorite greenery project!

For the Love of Legends: Dreaming of Mermaids

For the Love of Legends: Dreaming of Mermaids

The best part about being a kid is getting to believe in all the great magical creatures of our bedtime stories and childhood movies.  I’m so excited to be taking the time to credit these great legends by joining in on this blog tour.

I have three daughters, so there isn’t a better legend or creature to celebrate than mermaids for this tour.  One can not simply take a bath in my house, rather they must pretend they are mermaids swimming in the ocean. The tub is cluttered with diverse collection of mer-toys.  Dora, Barbie, and Ariel are just a few who congregate in the tub for a daily (or almost daily) swim.

I grew up on a lake and as a child. I used to have some of the strangest dreams about creatures that lived in the lake.  I currently live on a lake now, and sometimes those weird dreams try to escape even now as an adult.  I’m not sure where these come from, but I wish that just for once I could have a peaceful dream where a mermaid lived in our lake rather than something similar to the Loch Ness Monster.

To celebrate our love of mermaids, I stitched up a few outfits for the Littles.Believe it or not, finding perfect mermaid match in fabric was harder than I thought.  I used Riley Blake Saltwater Mermaids that I picked up at a local fabric shop in St. Louis last weekend while on a day out with my husband.   Poor guy, he barely survived 15 minutes in the little shop before he was asking when we were leaving.  Bless his heart.

LuxeDress6

I sewed up a dress for my prissy diva using the Lil Luxe Collection Lil Luxe Dress.  I used a single circle skirt and none of the fancy extras that make the fancy version oh-sew-lovely.  If you want to see a fancy one, check out this post.  It was such a quick sew for a simple dress.  I hemmed the skirt with some single fold bias tape.  Ahh! I’ve got to do that more often.  Add hemming with bias tape to my “Tried Something New in 2016” list because it is a keeper for the toolbox.

My sporty girl got a top and shorts for her outfit.  I used the Lil Luxe Dress again, but this time I used the tutorial from the blog to create a top with a gathered skirt that buttons, or in my case snaps, down the back.  If you read my last post about how to line up snaps, you may notice that I will be using them more frequently now. Who wouldn’t really?  The top needed some fun bottoms, and there may not be a faster pair of shorts than Tadah’s Flexi Shorts.  I used some denim I had purchased from Persnickety (back before they were “reorganizing” their fabric until the end of time). That pattern is so versatile, check it out if you haven’t.

I hope you have enjoyed checking out my creation in honor of the most popular legend among females everywhere.  There is nothing better than dreaming of being a mermaid.  Heaven knows that if I could see one, or even be one for a day, I would jump all over that!  I love the world of legends and hope to keep it alive in my home as my children grow.

Be sure to check out all the stops on the tour and participate in the giveaway too!  Good luck.  There is also a  link up at the bottom for you to share something you’ve made in the last three months that is related to a legend.  Be sure to link up to be entered into a drawing to win the latest OneThimble magazine and be considered for the CraftingCon Event.
