Zoey for a School Musical

I’m beginning to tackle sewing through my prizes from the awesome package I received from Project Run and Play.  Part of my package was a bundle of 8 patterns from Violette Field Threads.  How amazing is that?! It was like Christmas! Thanks to Violette Field Threads for the awesome bundle!! When selecting my patterns, I knew Peyton had a musical coming up where she was going to be needing a “pioneer girl” type dress, so I made sure to put the Zoey pattern on my bundle list.

We went to Hobby Lobby together to select the fabric.  We wanted something that fit her role AND that she could still wear after the event.  She made the final selection of the fabric, and I was feeling rather rushed so we opted for store bought bias tape for the trim.  I’m usually all about making my own bias tape, but when the clock is ticking I sometimes settle for RTS (ready to sew) items.  Zoey calls for snaps down the front and I basically ruin everything I attempt to put the pronged metal snaps on, so I went with sew in snaps.  (I forgot to snap an inside photo… oops.)  I will say, it took me a long time to hand sew those snaps in.  If I had Kam snaps on hand that would have looked appropriate I would have used those in a heartbeat.

I was slightly nervous about the bias trim as a feature that would stand out.  I really wanted to make sure I didn’t miss catching either side of the bias tape when stitching it down.  I have to say that I was 100% successful.  I just made sure that the side that was slightly wider wrapped around the back and then stitch from the front.  It was perfect!

I do want to make a small note about sizing for this.  I measured Peyton right before making this dress.  She measures at a size 4 width and a size 7 height.  Size 4 made me a tad nervous, so I went with a 7 bodice and blended it to the width of a 5.  It fits, but was a little snugger in the chest than I would have preferred.  Overall, the length of the sleeves and skirt worked out perfectly.  I hemmed this up a tad shorter so she wouldn’t trip walking up and down the stairs and risers during the program.

Right after the program we hopped over to this little garden area not too far from school and snapped these photos really quickly.  I thought it would be fund to have something for her to keep to look back on since we made this for the occasion.  I think it was a perfect setting.
